There are seminal moments in every endeavor. Sometimes the moments are marked and apparent, sometimes more subtle. When did my quest to share the tales of brewery visits and taprooms tastings begin? Did it begin when I tasted my first beer? When I visited my first bar? First ordered a craft beer at River City Brewery…my first brewery and Wichita’s oldest? Or was it when I first referred to myself as a “Taproom Tourist”?

Each of these moments contributed to this adventure. And from each I remember: who I drank with, the camaraderie, and the joviality of the experience. In each case, however, I do not remember the beer I drank. This is not meant to diminish the significance of beer nor the art of brewing, far from it. For the brewer’s craft is the heart and soul of the brewery; without which the taproom is just a tavern. My appreciation and admiration for those of you who are versed in the nuances of craft beer goes without saying. But I do not believe I have ever visited a taproom for the first time when I have not, at least once, said to someone “I’m not a beer expert, just a taproom tourist!” I do love the brews; I just cannot discuss the subtleties with any proficiency that would allow me to consider myself an authority. What I do know are taprooms. I have found my spot on a barstool at scores of taprooms throughout the region. And never without the expected amity and conversation that is always a part of my visit. This has held true regardless of size or characteristics of the brewery. The location could be suburban or city, rural or industrial, once inside, always I have found common ground with those within. Brewers, barkeeps, and patrons alike share a passion for this unique industry that has grown and flourished these past years. So, when next you find yourself in need of a tasty brew, make your way to a local brewpub, belly on up to the bar, and tell them Charlie sent you!
