CCB’s Thanksgiving beer suggestions! – November 21, 2022

We enjoy such a variety of food at Thanksgiving there are a number of beer
styles that can work well. A good single choice is a Saison. This Belgian Style
is popular with many brewers, especially this time of year. It can incorporate
autumn fruits and spices, a festive addition to your holiday table. A few other
selections that would also work well, depending on taste and beer experience of
your guests are listed below:

Saison – A Pale Ale, brewed with fruits and spices, rich and full of flavor.

Gose – A tart wheat beer. Sour with herbal and salty characteristics.

Brown Ale – A darker ale with malty characteristics and notes of caramel,
chocolate, and nuts.

India Pale Ale – Love ‘em or hate ‘em…an IPA’s full-body and earthy notes
pair well especially if you are serving smoked turkey.

A Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!! Cheers!

Summer travelsSeptember 2, 2022

It has been a busy summer at Charliecooksthebooks! The past few weeks have
included trips to Texas and Colorado, as well as visiting new breweries in
Kansas and White Crow Cider Company’s new Old Town location. Most of the visits
were posted in realtime on Instagram. If you’re not already following on
Instagram, please do –> @charliecooksthebooks.

Since I last posted to the website, eleven new breweries have been visited
and the growler collection now numbers eight-six. There is a short video
recently posted on Instagram featuring the growler collection. Please check it
out! –> https://www.instagram.com/charliecooksthebooks/

Also completed this summer was the “Charliecooksthebooks 316 Brewery Tour”.
Nine faithful CCB followers completed the tour and have now visited all the
breweries located within the 316 area code. A 620 tour could be next!

Friendly faces and tasty brews….the spoils of taproom touring!

  1.  Tom Carson September 2, 2022 Wow!

Breweries visited Updated – August 29, 2022

Total breweries visited: 137 / The growler collection numbers 86

This list is updated periodically. An up-to-date list is published on the “Breweries visited” page.

1. Rick August 29, 2022    Congrats, sounds like some new shelves may be needed soon.

2. Arlen Hamilton August 29,2022   If I am not mistaken, Jolly Fox is in Pittsburg, Not Lost in Ottawa.

3. markwalk7735 August 30,2022    Hi Charlie. A very impressive list!

Apologies for the multiple empty replies. Fat fingers . . . Did you see the news about the free beer at the Dublin stadium where Nebraska and Northwestern were playing last Saturday? I was there but the lines were so long to get a free beer I elected not to. Besides I already had 3 before the internet went down and all the bars in the stadium could not take cash. So they started giving the beer away. Only in Ireland… Mark

4. Charlie August 30, 2022   In reply to: Congrats, sounds like some new shelves may be needed soon.

Maybe so!! …on to 100 😊 Charlie

Gotta love the Irish! …they say the best beer is free beer!!

Thanks Arlen…corrected! I had flipped those two. 👍

I figured that was the case.

Local Flavor Grill and Tapworks! – July 7, 2022

Local Flavor Grill and Tapworks located in East Wichita (5400 E. Central) doesn’t brew…but has a variety of local favorites on tap. There is a local brew available to satisfy just about every taste. Several Wichita breweries as well as from around the state are represented. And if you’re looking for eats, there are some great daily food specials, I will be back for Taco Tuesdays! As I mentioned Local Flavor is not a brewery, but there was plenty of knowledgeable brewery conversation at the bar. Jeremy, the owner, is a wealth of information. If you haven’t been, Local Flavor should be on your list. Cheers!

Brewers and Barkeeps: A Short Essay From a Taproom Tourist – July 5, 2022

There are seminal moments in every endeavor. Sometimes the moments are
marked and apparent, sometimes more subtle. When did my quest to share the
tales of brewery visits and taprooms tastings begin? Did it begin when I tasted
my first beer? When I visited my first bar? First ordered a craft beer at River
City Brewery…my first brewery and Wichita’s oldest? Or was it when I first
referred to myself as a “Taproom Tourist”?

Each of these moments contributed to this adventure. And from each I
remember: who I drank with, the camaraderie, and the joviality of the
experience. In each case, however, I do not remember the beer I drank. This is
not meant to diminish the significance of beer nor the art of brewing, far from
it. For the brewer’s craft is the heart and soul of the brewery; without which
the taproom is just a tavern. My appreciation and admiration for those of you
who are versed in the nuances of craft beer goes without saying. But I do not
believe I have ever visited a taproom for the first time when I have not, at
least once, said to someone “I’m not a beer expert, just a taproom tourist!” I
do love the brews; I just cannot discuss the subtleties with any proficiency
that would allow me to consider myself an authority. What I do know are
taprooms. I have found my spot on a barstool at scores of taprooms throughout
the region. And never without the expected amity and conversation that is
always a part of my visit. This has held true regardless of size or
characteristics of the brewery. The location could be suburban or city, rural
or industrial, once inside, always I have found common ground with those
within. Brewers, barkeeps, and patrons alike share a passion for this unique
industry that has grown and flourished these past years. So, when next you find
yourself in need of a tasty brew, make your way to a local brewpub, belly on up
to the bar, and tell them Charlie sent you!

Cheers!

1.
Arlen July 5, 2022   I am
continually impressed by the number of owners, brewers, and barkeeps who are
happy to see you when visiting. They are indeed passionate about the product,
and seem to appreciate the validation of a tourist visiting their
establishments. Looking forward to visiting more distant taprooms with the
group.

2.      Ablivingston July 5, 2022   Consider coming to Pensacola! In
2019, we were rated as the city with the ninth most breweries per capita by the
market research company C+R Research. And several more breweries have opened
since then. We have 24 in the area. https://escambiabayhomebrewers.org/pensacola-fl-breweries

Summer evenings + Old Town breweries! – July 1, 2022

Ya gotta luv the summer evening brewery scene in Wichita! From quiet, relaxed moments at Third Place, enjoying conversation and an Ali’s Pale Ale (ABV 4.7%), to Norton’s just around the corner and steps away. Here, time spent enjoying one of the best outdoor area in Old Town, kids and dogs frolicking about. For those of you who know me well, you know I like a tasty brew with some hops to it and at a reasonable ABV. At Norton’s that’s a Deez Hops – Sultana (5% ABV). Good times!

    1. Jewel N Oz July 1, 2022    Great pics! 🍻

Ladybird Brewing – Winfield, KS – June 19, 2022

Ladybird is the first of what I hope to be visits to nearly a dozen new breweries that have opened in Kansas. We were fortunate to arrive when both Laura and Kaydee, the owners, were in the house! The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, seating available indoors and out. With a number of brews on tap, there is at least one (or more) sure to please. A range of styles represented, each with the character and qualities expected, yet not overwhelming to one’s senses. Ladybird will definitely be part of upcoming CCB day trips!

North Dallas! – June 1, 2022

Finally got the CCB wheels rolling again post-covid (and post knee
surgery!)… first stop: North Dallas! It felt like we hadn’t missed a beat,
visited four of the local spots with many more on the “to-do” list!
Much fun tasting a variety of brews, meeting folks, telling tales, and learning
about the local favorites. As always, time well spent chatting with barkeeps
and patrons alike; met a fellow brewery tourist CPA from Chicago and a couple
from Kansas City now transplanted to Dallas. Great start to summer 2022!

Visited:

Westlake Brewing – Dallas. Located in Deep Ellum. The history of Deep Ellum,
a small but significant area truly runs deep.

OOD Muse Brewery Company – Farmers Branch. Named in recognition of the
owner’s daughters. Check out their website for details.

Bitter Sitters Brewery – Addison. Great local hang out, everyone seemed to
know everyone. To the Wichita crew …Addison’s version of Third Place!

3 Nations Brewing Co. – Carrollton. Located in a massive old grain mill with
capacity for a multitude and most seats were filled!

1.    Rick June 1, 2022   Sounds great, glad to hear you are doing well. Happy travels.

2.    Arlen Hamilton June 1,
2022
Thank you Charlie, your writing makes me feel like I was there!

3.    Kyle Travis June 1, 2022   Yahoo, CCB is rolling again. Just rolled into Dallas myself to meet my newest grandson. Must have missed you
by a whisker. Glad the brew tour is back in business.

4.    Sturkle June 1, 2022   Very nice, thanks for sharing, travel safe

Livin’ Large at Charliecooksthebook!!

March 2020

It’s a busy time of year here at headquarters…but even so we managed to have a very enjoyable February. For those of you who were at the February Tasting Club meeting, you may have noticed we had twice the food typically found at a meeting. The reason, and my confession…meatloaf. Meatloaf is my kryptonite and the main reason I’m a half a century (in more ways than one!) past my high school wrestling weight! 😀 Soo, I made two…plenty of leftovers!

Well on to March… Club meeting is set up for the 18th and we will have at least a couple of Wichita Tour IV stops, beginning with Norton’s this Wednesday, the 4th. Please check out the Upcoming Activities page –> Upcoming Activities and please join us! Even if you don’t think the Tasting Club is for you, come to an event now and then and have some fun!

Prost!

Tour continues…Third Place Brewing tonight!

02/19/20: ICT Tour IV continues at Third Place Brewing today: 630 E. Douglas. Please join us! 5:00ish….or meet at The Lounge before hand. We have a couple of growlers from our travels chilling in the fridge:

    • Channel Surfing 64 oz: IPA – from Strang Days. KC, MO

    • Schmoo Whale 64 oz: Imperial Stout – Fields & Ivy. Lawrence, KS

CCB Taproom Touring & Tasting Club meeting on Friday 02/21/2020. 5:00 PM. Tasting begins around 5:45. Members, please attend. Thinking about joining? …come on by, there will be fine brews, slow-cooker meatloaf and green beans (with bacon & potatoes), as well as a social hour, good times, and friendly conversation!

Road Trip! Tulsa

I’m heading to Tulsa tomorrow to spend a couple of days visiting the area breweries, growler collecting, enjoying good company, and taking a little time off to watch the Shocks play on Saturday! There are about ten breweries in the area I have yet to visit; I’m not promising I’ll get to all of them, but I do promise to bring back some goods brews for tasting and availability in the Members’ Lounge….which reminds me, if you haven’t joined you’re missing one of the best craft beer experiences around!

Here’s a list of the potential stops:

American Solera Brewery
Broken Arrow Brewing Company
Dead Armadillo Craft Brewing
Heirloom Rustic Ales
Nine Band Brewing Co.
Pearl Beach Brew Pub
Pippin’s Taproom at High Gravity
Prairie Artisan Ales Brewpub
Renaissance Brewing Co.
Welltown Brewing

And might re-visit these:

American Solera SoBo
Cabin Boys Brewery
Elgin Park
Marshall Brewing Compnay
NEFF Brewing
Nothing’s Left Brewing Co.

Cheers!

Kyle Travis JANUARY 29, 2020 AT 4:17 PM

Looking forward to seeing you in Tulsa and working our way through “the list”.

Charliecooksthebooks 2020 New Year’s Resolutions!

    1. First, to give a gigantic thank you to everyone who has supported our tours and tasting club! Charliecooksthebooks has exceeded all expectations; providing entertainment, education, and enjoyment to the many who have participated, while supporting the growing brewery industry in our great city and throughout the state!

    1. To continue adding to the CCB growler collection, which now numbers 44 (35 from Kansas breweries), until every growler available from Kansas breweries has been collected.

    1. To gather the final few signatures from representatives of all Kansas breweries. Note: After I began my tour of the state’s breweries I received as a gift, Bob Crutchfield’s wonderful book “Kansas Beer A Heady History”. I have endeavored to have owners, brewers, and/or other representatives at every visit sign the book. At present signatures number 104. The first few breweries were visited prior to having the book…so I must revisit these few.

    1. At present I have visited every brewery in the state of Kansas. There are however, new ones on the horizon; I resolve to continue the tour visiting each new Kansas brewery when it opens.

    1. And finally, to continue to improve all that CCB offers from the new lounge area at our headquarters and the informal tastings to the monthly club meetings and local brewery tours!

Now…here are just a couple of suggested resolutions for you! 😊

    1. Join the Tasting Club!! This is where the action is, and it’s not just for beer snobs and craft beer aficionados. It’s a chance to expand your knowledge and experience…the food is awesome and, although craft beer is our focus, many other libations are available. At $75/quarter it is and outstanding bargain that will return its value many times over!

    1. Stop in and take a look at the growler collection and the signed “Kansas Beer A Heady History… better yet, get a copy, read up on the growing Kansas craft beer scene…you’ll find more meaning and appreciation the next time you sip a cold one!

Wichita Westside – Augustino and Wichita Brewing West

It was a double treat last night as our group of a dozen or so visited two west side breweries: Wichita Brewing West and Augustino. We enjoyed good food, good brews, and good company. And for the first time, thanks to the Bolain/Gerbitz ladies, brewery tourists spanning three generations joined the tour!

Wichita Brewing has some of the best pizza in town and brews to satisfy every expectation from the WuShock Wheat to the Shaven Yak and the V.6 IPA. After a couple of hours of good beer and tall tales we headed less than a mile south to Augustino Brewing. After arriving, our large group found ample room in the Anger Elephant Restaurant addition to the brewery. We were joined by Augustine, owner and brewer, who let us know about a recently tapped Vanilla Porter, Naked Deception, not yet on the menu. It took only a taste, and it was decided we needed a growler of this back at headquarters to be enjoyed soon in the cozy lounge area at charliecooksthebooks!

Southeast Kansas

The Boiler Room Brewhaus – Fort Scott

The Boiler Room, Fort Scott’s first and only brewery, is located in the historic downtown area.  Owners, Bryan and Barbara offer an enjoyable gathering spot to meet, relax and enjoy some great beer. We sampled several brews on tap and had a difficult time deciding which to bring back and share. We opted for the Hive’s Secrete Hefeweizen uniquely brewed using honey produced at Bryan and Barbara own farm! Next time you’re in the area, take the time to stop and visit the Boiler Room…time well spent!

Drop the H Brewing Company & Jolly Fox Brewery – Pittsburg

In October, Pittsburg jumped from not having any local breweries to being treated to two! Drop the H and Jolly Fox, located just two blocks apart opened within days of each other. And from what we saw, this college town will have no trouble supporting both. A good variety of brews and food at both; no need to pick, start at one, then take the three-minute walk and finish at the second!

Oklahoma Road Trip

Back from another enjoyable road adventure; a two-day, two brewery jaunt to Ponca City and Stillwater. Unaware of the winter hours I arrived at Vortex Alley in Ponca City a couple of hours before it opened. However, being a traveling brewery tourist does have its advantages. Dave, one of the owners saw me poking around outside, invited me in, and my own private tasting commenced. Vortex has six taps available and with these six provides a great variety of rotating beers. Vortex is the only brewery in town, but Ponca Citians aren’t missing a beat. Vortex has a taproom and patio area with amble seating; a great place to gather, pass the time, and have some outstanding beer. CCBTT&T Club members will be treated to a growler of Pink Mist, a Sour Gose…. those of you who who haven’t found a sour you enjoy, give this a try. It may not convert you, but you owe it to yourself to partake and taste the creativity that brewers are bringing to their craft!

Iron Monk in Stillwater, like Vortex, is the only game in town. But the enthusiasm shown by the bartenders and patrons alike indicated to me that it’s not because of a lack of interest. My flight included three brews from which I had a hard time deciding which to bring back. Velvet Antler, an easy-drinking American Amber Ale, Stilly Wheat, a locally popular Belgian Wheat Ale, or the simply named Milk Stout. I opted for the Milk Stout which will be part of our upcoming tasting. It is a classic Milk Stout with the roasty, chocolately, and coffee tastes expected in a Milk Stout; with no single characteristic overtaking. Iron Monk’s website features food pairing for each of their beers, a trend I think we will be seeing more of in days to come.

December notes

1) We will be traveling to Ponca City and Stillwater, OKon Saturday 12/07 to visit Vortex Alley Brewing and Iron Monk Brewing Company, returning with growlers to be shared. Anyone heading down to Stillwater for Wichita State’s game on Sunday who wants to make a weekend of it, let me know and we can make plans to meet up.

2) CCB Taproom Touring and Tasting Club December meeting will be Wednesday 12/11/19.

3) In addition to continuing our monthly meetings featuring brews and comfort food, as well as continued gatherings at local breweries, the Tasting Club is looking forward to a couple of enhancements for 2020; including expanded tastings, guest speakers, and changes to our club house.

4) Membership dues for 2020 are $75 per quarter. Associate memberships are also available for $30 per month.

Limestone Beer Co. – Friday 11/22/19

Wichita Tour III – We’ll be meeting up at Limestone Beer Co. 707 N. Waco. Limestone shares space with Sweet Allie B’s so in addition to tasty brews, enjoying some really good food is as easy as saying “I’ll have that, too!”

Friday 11/22/19 – 5:00ish after work, perhaps earlier.. See you there!

Limestone is the eight stop of our Wichita Tour III, the last located near the downtown area. During the next few weeks, we will finish up with Augustino’s and the two Wichita Brewing Company locations.

Update on the Kansas Tour: I have visited fifty-two breweries in the state, two more to complete the tour. This final leg requires a trip to the Kansas City area. There are however, another couple of brewery related endeavors I am undertaking that may requires trips to Cheney, El Dorado, Emporia, Salina, and Manhattan. A few day trips and probably an overnighter. I always enjoy having company and the breweries always appreciate a Wichita contingency, so let me know if you have an interest in coming along and visiting any of these fair cities. Prost!

Aero Plains – Thursday 11/14/19

We’ll be meeting at Aero Plains tomorrow. 117 N. Handley. See you there!

What: CCB Wichita Brewery Tour

When: Thursday 11/14/19, Most gather after work, around 5:00 P.M. – but it opens at 3:00 P.M.

Pictures from yesterday, my first visit to Down Under Brewery in Beloit and a second visit to 15-24 Brew House in Clay Center. Good times!

Central Standard Brewing

Our visit to Central Standard Brewing has been moved to Wednesday, November 6. Too much basketball happening on Tuesday….. Same drill; I’ll be there by 5:00 P.M., probably a little earlier…Opens at 3:00 P.M. 156 S. Greenwood.

On to November

October was a whirlwind month at charliecooksthebooks, making huge strides in completing our Kansas tour. Forty-eight Kansas craft breweries are now under our belt; a few more if you count the chains. A worthy goal is to complete the state by year’s end. Three road trips are in the works: Pittsburg & Fort Scott, Beloit, and one more trip to the Kansas City area. Dates have not been set, but likely we will begin next week.

Central Standard Brewing, 156 Greenwood, is next on the local tour. Wednesday, November 6. I’ll be there by 5:00 P.M. for sure, likely earlier….It opens at 3:00 P.M. 🙂

Final Day – Growlerfest and Slow-Cooker Gala

Two days down and one to go…Tonight is it! Last chance to partake in our celebration of Northeast Kansas breweries. 1011 E. Douglas, Friday 10/25/19 5:00 P.M. till everyone leaves happy. 🙂

Northeast Kansas Road Trip

An ambitious undertaking and an incredible journey! It’s not all about the beer…a whirlwind tour of Kansas’ northeast breweries has only strengthened my love of this industry. The entrepreneurial spirit and drive to improve was a common theme among the brewers and owners I met during this short adventure. Oh, and by the way…I enjoyed some truly outstanding brews! From Free State in Lawrence, the granddaddy of Kansas’ modern brewery scene to Wakarusa in Eudora, an off the beaten path neighborhood watering hole; good beer and friendly conversation flowed freely. The original itinerary included sixteen breweries, but with a little persistence and an open mind we managed nineteen! There is not enough space here to fairly describe them all, but they are listed below. We’ve returned with eight growlers, too many for one meeting… So, we will be holding an Open House this week and they will be shared! Beginning Wednesday, continuing Thursday and Friday …stop by and enjoy some good beer, stories and conversation, and Chili from Charlie’s Comfort Kitchen!

Kansas Territory Brewing and 15-24 Brew House

Recently the Kansas Brewery Tour took me straight north nearly to the Nebraska state line. During the week Kansas Territory Brewing in Washington, KS is open only at midday: 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. This made timing important and I had to nix the idea of a pit stop at either Three Rings in McPherson or Blue Skye in Salina.

I arrived in Washington just as the clock was striking eleven. As I walked in I was immediately greeted by Sara the bartender and Brandon, Head Brewer; immediately I felt I was among friends. We spent several minutes swapping stories of brews and breweries before I settled on a flight of four…later expanded to five. After making a good dent in my first pour, the very well-known KTBC Life Coach, Brandon offered a tour of the brewing facilities. KTBC is home to an incredible operation, nestled in this community of about 1,000 is one of the largest owner operated craft breweries I have visited. After the tour as I settled back to my flight I was introduced to Brad and Donna, the owners. For the next forty-five minutes or so I listened with much appreciation to the stories of growth, entrepreneurship, local pride and of course, master brewing. My own small CPA practice was built on relationships with individuals such as Brad and Donna, small business owners with a hands-on approach to their craft. This brewery adventure started because I enjoy a well crafted brew now and then but has grown into an undeniable passion due to this entrepreneurial spirit that is such a part of this exciting industry. Kansas Territory embodies this spirit as much as any brewery I have visited; making the short journey north will awaken the brewery tourist in anyone who ventures there!

Just a half-hour or so south of KTBC located in Clay Center is 15-24 Brew House. Opened just under a year ago it is named for the two highways running through Clay Center: US 24 and Kansas 15. Clint, Brew Master was behind the bar, so I received an outstanding introduction to his brews and meaningful descriptions of the beers available on tap. With his help I selected four varied beers including the 1 Eye Open IPA. This is a great choice for IPA drinkers, its tropical touch and as they say a “hoppy backbone” make it a quintessential IPA. 15-24 also has a great selection of burgers and other food favorites.

For the Tasting Club’s September meeting I returned with 64 oz. growlers of KTBC’s Tedly-Bru-Right-Stout and 15-24’s 1 Eye Open IPA… Both brews were heartily enjoyed by our small group of seven or eight. Not a drop remained…a testament to these outstanding breweries!

Birthday Tasting

As craft beer enthusiasts, many of you are members of the CCB Tasting Club or have attended one of the open tasting held periodically at our headquarters. Attendees have also included those of you who do not consider yourself beer drinkers but enjoy stepping into our world now and then and perhaps discovering something new to explore… One person I can not count in either group is my lovely wife. Since I have been unable to convince her to come into our world, I decided to take it to her. Yesterday was her birthday and to celebrate we of course had the traditional cake and ice cream, but my gift to her was a full-fledged CCB style tasting! We featured her favorite (and the only beer she drinks) Michelob Ultra Gold and her favorite slow-cooker dishes. To venture just a bit more to the bolder side, we also had a sampling of Wichita Brewing Company’s WuShock Wheat! 😀 ..Slow cooker treats included some real comfort foods: Sloppy Joes, BBQ beans made with a molasses sauce, and jalapeno corn. The set up would have looked very familiar to those of you who have joined us at CCB tastings. This may become a new tradition at our house!

River City Brewing Co.

We made our way over to River City Brewing Co. for stop #3 of the Wichita Tour III. Good beer, good food… and a motley crew! 🙂

On Wednesday the 18th, we are heading north for a visit to Kansas Territory Brewing Co. in Washington, KS and 15-24 Brew House in Clay Center. On Friday our Taproom Touring and Tasting Club will hold its September meeting.

The Wichita Tour will continue next week with a visit to Nortons Brewing Company. Stand by for more information. Cheers!

Open Tasting…today! 09/06/19

Another extra tasting at CCB. Not an official meeting, an informal, open tasting. A short road trip last week took me to Hutchinson so naturally I stopped at Sandhills and Salt City Brewery, returning with a growler of Salt City’s State Fair. To make the evening interesting we will also be featuring a WBC’s Oztoberfest… and just for kicks 10Barrel Brewing’s (Bend, OR) Crush Cucumber Sour. Additional libations will be available prior to the featured brews. Food from Charlie’s Comfort Kitchen: Slow-Cooker Shepherd’s Pie and Creamed Peas. Why Creamed Peas…because I didn’t have any marrowfat peas…if that doesn’t explain it, ask me later! 🙂 And I may have some Jalapeno Corn on hand. See you there!

What: Open Tasting

When: 09/06/19 5:00ish till whenever

Where: Charliecooksthebooks headquarters 1011 E. Douglas.

Third Place – 09/04/19

Wichita Tour III continues – Tomorrow 09/04/2019 at Third Place Brewing 630 E. Douglas 5:00 PM. I’ll be walking over from headquarters, leaving around 4:30.

I didn’t think I could make it on Wednesday but I might for a short time. Dick

Open Tasting – Wednesday 08/28/19

CCB is hosting an extra tasting, not an official Tasting Club meeting. It is open and informal…  I was recently in Oklahoma City and picked up a growler of East Coast IPA and a six pack of Twisted Stache Milk Stout from Twisted Spike Brewery. Additional libations will be available prior to the featured brews. Food from Charlie’s Comfort Kitchen will be served: Sticky BBQ Slow Cooker Beef Meatballs made with homemade BBQ sauce, Vegan BBQ Meatballs (my first attempt as this!), and Jalapeno Corn. See you there!

Western Kansas – Dodge City and Garden City

Flat Mountain Brewhouse – Garden City, KS

First up was Flat Mountain Brewhouse in Garden City which opened in January of this year. On a previous trip to Hays, while at LB Brewing Co., enjoying their GABF Gold Medal winner No. 6 Oatmeal Stout… I met Xavier, Flat Mountain’s manager. We spent some time chatting about Flat Mountain, specific craft beers, and the Kansas brewery scene in general.

When I arrived at Flat Mountain, I was greeted by Lourdes, our welcoming and friendly bartender. She helped me settle in and familiarize myself with the food and beer menus, but when it came down to actual beer recommendations, she deferred to Xavier. Xavier proved a great guide in describing the various brews on tap. I choose a flight which included a brown ale, two IPAs, and a Mexican lager…all very tasty. A growler of the Broncbuster brown ale will be enjoyed at the August meeting of the Tasting Club.

Dodge City Brewing – Dodge City, KS

Dodge City Brewing Co. opened in 2017 and one I have definitely been looking forward to visiting. Larry Cook, co-founder and master brewer is not only a former Wichitan but also a former accountant. We had a lot to talk about, not just craft beer, but names we both remembered from our early days of bean counting. Dodge City Brewing was buzzing on this early Friday evening. People enjoying an ample selection of craft brews and delicious brick oven baked pizza. I tasted eight or ten of the great beers on tap (only a sip mind you…I had a long drive back to Wichita!) I am returning with a 64 oz. growler of the Velvet Hammer, a 10.9% ABV Scotch Ale to be shared at our August Tasting meeting.

Reminder

Friday 08/09/2019 is the final meeting for the Summer Season of CCB Taproom Touring and Tasting Club. If you aren’t a member, come check it out. [1011 E. Douglas, 5:00ish] We will be signing up for the Fall season. Very reasonable dues and I challenge anyone to find another semi-retired CPA office with so much fun and friendship packed into it!

Update!

Hello all! I apologize for my short hiatus from the blog. We had an absolutely outstanding July Tasting Club meeting with about twenty in attendance. If you haven’t joined the club, please consider it. It’s not just for craft beer snobs; it’s truly a great group of people who enjoy good food and drink, and friendly company. The food is pretty dang good, if I don’t say so myself! A new session starts in September, but if you have an interest feel free to join us at the August meeting (date TBD)

We will be meeting at Wichita Brewery Co. – West on Monday the 29th. 8815 W. 13th St N, at the corner of 13th and Tyler. This is the final stop of the Charliecooksthebooks Wichita Tour II. Hope to see you there.

I will be going to Dodge City and Garden City next week to visit Dodge City Brewing, Flat Mountain Brewhouse, and perhaps Boot Hill Distillery. This will be a two day, one night trip. I haven’t finalized what day I will leave as yet, so if you have an interest, let me know and we can coordinate plans. Cheers! My new business card! ▼▼▼

Do you work any longer? 😊

    1.  Charlie JULY 25, 2019 AT 9:10 PM I’m a brewery tourist and a back road traveler…and yes I work hard at it!

Whistling Springs Brewing Co. – McDonald County, MO

Located about two miles north of the Arkansas/Missouri state line in Southeast McDonald County, Missouri you will find Whistling Springs Brewery; one of the most interesting and secluded breweries I have come across. It was an adventure down dirt roads, but with the help of a tiny sign and a desire to get there we found our way to the WSB taproom and brewery. Inside was a surprise; although literally situated on a farm, the taproom was packed. Nearly every seat was taken, festive conversation and music dominated the air as we made our way in.

We were greeted by Richard Davis, owner, seventy-four-year-old Viet Nam veteran, and an amiable host. He and his wife, Pam treated us to tastes of several of the brews they had on tap before we made our flight choices. Although it was a busy night as they tended to their barkeeping duties, there was still time enough to swap a story or two. The brews ranged from a stout and an IPA to their Loki’s Lemon Ale, a refreshing Shandy (sometimes called a Radler). The Tasting Club enjoyed a sampling of the Loki at our July meeting.

If you are the adventurous type, this is a brewery that should be on your bucket list, well worth the extra effort needed to get there. But make sure to check the hours, as is often true with smaller craft breweries, hours of operations can be limited.

Arkansas Day 3: Bentonville

Bike Rack Brewing Co. 1) 8th Street Brewery & Taproom and 2) SW A Street – The Experiment

Bike Rack is Bentonville’s oldest brewery and now has three locations; one in Springdale and two in Bentonville. We began at the A Street location. This is where the Bike Rack began and where they now brew with an experimental approach, hence the name “The Experiment”. The site houses a small, cozy taproom for perhaps fifteen people inside and additional outdoor seating. We shared a couple of flights which included the current experimental brews: Night Owl, a medium-bodied creme ale and Das Brut, a IPA with an awesome hop aroma, both are delicious.

Less than a mile to the east is the newer 8th Street location, featuring a larger taproom and additional brewing facilities. Here we weren’t the only ones enjoying a bit of “day drinking”. Striking up conversations with several other patrons we discovered we weren’t the only ones touring the area taking in the local craft beer scene.

We brought back for the upcoming Tasting Club meeting a Belgian style Ginger Lemon Witbier. So don’t miss out, get your dues up-to-date or join… and don’t be a beer snob, even if Witbier is not your style, this is delicious and deserves a try!

New Province Brewing Company

Continuing our tour eastward we arrived at yet another brewery brimming with the friendliness common to the craft beer community. Our bartender’s knowledge and passion for the local industry was apparent as she fielded our questions about now only New Provinces’ brews but the entire Northwest Arkansas beer scene. Several of the beers justify stopping in for a pint, especially my favorite, the Yeoman, an English style coffee porter sourced with local coffee beans. A crowler of the Yeoman will be featured at the July 12th Tasting.

The overall craft beer industry in Northwest Arkansas is exciting and new. Only in 2012 did Benton County vote to repeal nearly eight years of prohibition. Not only is NWA a truly beautiful and extraordinary region of the country but now also a great destination for craft beer enthusiasts. Just a half day’s drive from Wichita, this will definately not be my last visit.

Stay tuned, tomorrow I will write up Whistling Springs, the most interesting brewery I have come across to-date!

Arkansas – Day 2: Rogers

After a restful night at my host’s home on Beaver Lake, the Arkansas brewery tour began in earnest. First a hearty breakfast at Wesner’s, a local diner where you can get anything from a vegetable omelette to biscuits and gravy. A great thing about this trip was our crew consisted of active Tasting Club members: myself, Steve (my host), Rick, and Janell. The four of us represent varying preferences in beer styles but all enjoy the friendship and sense of adventure that is part of being a brewery tourist.

Rendezvous Junction Brewing Co.

The tour began with just two of us, Janell and myself. After gathering our bearing we arrived at our first stop. Rendezvous is the brewery associated with Foster’s Pint & Plate, Northwest Arkansas’ largest pub with dozens of local brews on tap from throughout the state, including eleven of their own featured beers. We ordered two flights of four brews each and with samples of the other three we managed to experience the complete array of featured beers. Raul, our bartender was a tremendous help. His interest, knowledge, and enthusiasm for craft beer was addictive and added an extra level of enjoyment to our experience.

Ozark Brewing Co.

Next up was Ozark Beer Co. located in a former flour milling building in downtown Rogers. One gets the feeling of stepping back in time entering the large taproom with its hardwood floors and high ceilings. Ozark has a good selection of styles with reasonable ABVs, including several flavors of Hard Seltzers. The seltzers are refreshing and simply delicious and further evidence that the brewery scene continues to expand way beyond the oft held stereotype of craft beer. They are not your father’s seltzers either, with ABVs of 5% or more.

Bentonville Brewing Company

Yes, Bentonville Brewing Company is located in Rogers…but only temporarily. Perhaps even as I write this BBC will be relocating back to Bentonville, AR. Its temporary location is a warehouse on South 1st St in Rogers with a simple sign above the door “Craft beer sold here”. Inside is a very cozy bar area with seating for six or seven and tables to accommodate many more. A couple of the patrons I met at the bar and spend a good deal of time talking to were familiar with Wichita. We spent much time comparing notes on both Wichita’s and Northwest Arkansas’ craft beer scene. One of Bentonville’s local favorites, and mine too, is the Homewrecker IPA. Great aroma and hops, everything an IPA lover looks for.

Arkansas Adventure!

A three day, eight brewery tour of the Rogers/Bentonville area with three craft brew comrades; what a great weekend! Plus a short road trip north of the state line into Missouri to one of the most interesting brewery I have found yet…more on that later!

Day One – Hawk Moth Brewery, Rogers, AR

Located in downtown Rogers, Hawk Moth is a cozy small batch brewery and taproom. This being our first stop in the area we spent some time chatting with Jamie, our amiable bartender about not only Hawk Moth but the entire craft beer scene in northwest Arkansas. My flight included a nice array of styles, including the Cherry Mingle, a sour red ale and one of my favorites. I brought back a crowler for the next tasting…If you haven’t joined the tasting club…you should! 🙂 An interesting side note: a Hawk Moth is the moth depicted in the promotional poster for Silence of the Lambs.

Taproom Touring and Tasting Club meeting

The CCB Taproom Touring and Tasting Club recently held its June meeting. For those of you who are not familiar with all that is happening at charliecooksthebooks, here is a brief recap:

    1. Get-togethers: Once a week or so we will designate a local brewery and send out an open invitation to anyone and everyone who wants to join us. The cost is whatever you spend on beer and food. Information regarding these get-togethers is posted on the schedule page –> Schedule Page There is also a email sent a day or so in advance listing pertinent information. If you are not receiving the emails but would like to be included on the list, please let us know.

    1. Road trips: Sometimes day trips to nearby breweries in towns around the state, but more often overnighters. Generally I make these trips solo, but company is always welcome. The cost is whatever you spend on food, beer, and lodging (if necessary). Transportation expense is on me.

    1. Finally we have the Tasting Club. This is where everything comes together. At least once a month we meet to sample brews that have been purchased during our other adventures; from around Kansas and beyond. Many of the brews sampled are not distributed to Wichita, so a truly unique experience is provided. Food is also provided. Come hungry. I have honed my slow-cooking expertise enough that I am willing to say, I think in all likelihood you will be pleased. This month we served pulled pork, vegetarian quinoa black bean stuffed peppers, homemade guacamole, and more. We currently have over twenty members and the camaraderie is outstanding. There are trimester dues (four months) to help defray costs. Currently we are in our summer session, but if you are interested in joining mid-season or attending the July meeting, let us know and we will get you the information. July will be featuring beers from Arkansas breweries!

We have been active on Instagram @charliecooksthebooks for sometime and recently posted our first video. New to us this week is our charliecooksthebooks Facebook page. Please check them out! …..we love “likes” and followers on both!

BJ’s Brewhouse

Interesting turn out last night…. BJ’s is located about as far east in Wichita as one can find a brewery. True, it was raining last night but that didn’t stop our hardy west siders from venturing out; apparently though, umbrellas are hard to come by on the east side as the east side turn out was zero! That of course, did not stop us from having a grand time. We all enjoyed good food, a great conversation with our bartender regarding what qualifies a brewhouse as a “craft brewer”, and to top it off, $4 Happy Hour brews!

Upcoming is our Arkansas tour, after which we will have our final Wichita Tour II stop at WBC – West. Stay tuned!

Mid-State Tour: Hutchinson, Salina, and Sylvan Grove!

Three of us packed it up early Sunday for a day trip to visit Props & Hops Brewing at Fly Boy in Sylvan Grove, KS. This presented us with the opportunity to re-visit Blue Skye Brewery and Eats in Salina on our way up…and loop through Hutchinson on our way back to say hello to old friends at Salt City and Sandhills. It all made for a fun-filled, enjoyable day. We had an especially good time at Blue Skye where Merinda treated us to a mini-tour of the facilities and soon-to-open expansion. Not to mention talking us into one of the amazing homemade cinnamon rolls! In Hutch we only had time for short hellos and quick pints… and the pint, unfortunately for this driver… was H2O!

Props & Hops at Fly Boys – Sylvan Grove, KS

As the name implies, Props & Hops not only emphasizes crafting great beer, but also pays tribute to small aircraft and aviation. For his day job, the owner Clay Haring operates a crop-dusting business; throughout the restaurant are photos of a dozen or so planes that he owns or has owned at one time. For us, the time was spent tasting a variety of brews with creative flight related names such as Tailspin IPA, Barnstormer Brown, Lomcevak, and Aviator Ale. As for the restaurant there is a good selection of burgers and sides, and my choice, chicken & waffles. Props & Hops has all the trappings that one would expect from a small town brewery: friendly people, a relaxed quality, good conversation, an overall great place to stop in for a beer and a bite to eat. Next time you find yourself traveling along I-70, it would be well worth your time to make the short detour north to Sylvan Grove.

Bricktown Brewery – east

A table full of regulars and a newbie made for a festive time at Bricktown last night. Entertaining conversation, an amble selection of brews, and good food all contributed to getting this River Festival weekend kicked off a day early. As the evening progressed I scanned the table… noticing various pints, several flights, tasty looking pulled pork sandwiches…and one small anomaly…A Manhattan!? …Well obviously, we still have work to do!! 😀 Just kidding Ms. Manhattan drinker… we were all glad to see you make your charliecooksthebooks debut!

Chris Wallace JUNE 7, 2019 AT 2:57 PM

Thank you for coming to the east side of town!! I enjoyed the lively conversation and was sorry to have to leave! Manhattans ROCK!! 🥃😎

Springfield, IL – Anvil & Forge, Buzz Bomb, and Obed & Isaac’s

My time spent in Chicago was absolutely wonderful: the sights and sounds of the city, good food, old friends and new, family, and a dozen breweries. But with the Windy City in the rear-view mirror, the final leg of my journey lay ahead. Perhaps a test run for future Amtrak adventures, considerations for just a single Amtrak way-stop require a extra bit of planning. Coordinating the limited train schedules, living out of a backpack, brewery business hours, locations, and travel distances between selected sites can pose a considerable challenge. Springfield provided a perfect answer. The Lincoln Service route runs from Chicago to St. Louis with a stop in Springfield. Located within a half-mile of the train station is a Wyndham hotel and three breweries. An Amtrak traveler/brewery tourist’s dream!

Obed & Isaac’s Microbrewery

I arrived at the station just after noon, with map in hand, I hoisted my pack and off I went. Obed & Isaac’s is a few blocks south of the station and was chosen as the first stop because it is the only one of the three open midday. As I approached, I believe a few patrons seated outside enjoying a meal and the pleasant weather, took note of the slightly ruffled traveler with a clothes ladened backpack slung over his shoulders. Once inside, the pack actually helped lend a visual explanation to my brewery quest. Obed & Isaac’s is located in a beautiful, old, historic building. I didn’t venture into the restaurant section but spent my time in the smaller, cozy bar area that seats perhaps twenty people. I enjoyed conversations with Jake and Ryan , Bartender and Bar Manager, as well as patrons, mostly locals stopping in for a bite or an afternoon brew. After an hour or two, my flight was empty and I said my goodbyes…on to Springfield stop #2.

Buzz Bomb Brewing Co.

Perhaps looking a bit lost I walked up to a small group seated outside at a sidewalk table, my head turned to read the store fronts as I went past. Just as I realized I had found Buzz Bomb, I hear “Hey man, how you doin’?”, I stepped right in and made my introduction. I ordered a sampling of several beers on tap and as I was beginning to settle in I was greeted by Bill, the owner. I shared my adventure story and in return was treated to a tour of the facilities and a look of the upstairs lounge. Buzz Bomb is a favorite type of brewery of mine; not big, a place to come, sit, enjoy, and drink a brew or two. Buzz Bomb offers the best of many worlds, sit outside, people watch and/or enjoy the weather, sit at the bar, talk with friends and tell stories, or retreat from the world and relax in the quiet lounge area upstairs.

Anvil & Forge Brewing and Distilling Company

Closest to my hotel, Anvil & Forge became my final stop, not only for Springfield but for this entire adventure. I admit, as the third stop of the day, I took it easy. The opinions of a couple of locals at the previously visited breweries led me to try a couple of their favorites: Hazy Midwest Sunrise, a New England IPA, and Hi(bisus) I’m Very Cherry, a sour ale. I’m returning with a crowler of the Hazy Sunrise, which was carefully packed with hotel ice in a mini-cooler for the return trip. Anvil & Forge operates as a coffee shop by day, serving freshly brewed and crafted coffee. Re-opening late afternoon as a brewery and distillery. Community support is apparent, several walls throughout the taproom display numerous pieces of local artwork.

Thanks, Chris… posting these short narratives has become part of the enjoyment of the journey!

Downtown Chicago – Rock Bottom and Adams Street

To assure an enjoyable experience, travelers and adventurers alike are wise to keep a good helping of flexibility in their back pocket. On the day I set aside to tour downtown Chicago, this notion was put to the test. I do a reasonable amount of research before I set out on any solo journey, especially if I know I will be doing a fair amount of walking. I will familiarize myself via the internet as best I can with available transportation, hours of operations of various breweries I seek to visit, exact locations, and the distance between the various sites. For this particular leg of my visit I had planned on using Metra, the commuter rail system for the Chicago Metro area. I knew the locations of the relevant stations and the routes and schedules of the lines I would be using. Or so I thought…unfortunately websites are not always up-to-date. The schedule for the Union Pacific – North line had changed and I arrived at the station a full ninety minutes before the next train would be coming though. This early arrival had one advantage, no other travelers were around and I had the station attendant all to myself. We had a brief conversation about my brewery tour, she understood completely my misgiving about waiting around an empty station when there was beer to be savored. She helped me rework my route. Now mind you, I’m not exactly sure I got downtown any sooner than if I had waited for the Metra. The new route required a walk of about a mile to the “L” station, Chicago’s mass transit rail system, and a line transfer. Another small consideration was it was raining; but I had my trusty umbrella at hand and I didn’t want to wait, so off I went. A simplistic and perhaps blurry distinction between the two rail systems is the “L” serves the urban lines and the Metra, more the suburban. Suffice it to say, this urban journey on the “L” red line was both interesting and entertaining to this newly initiated rider.

Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery

From my initial research I remembered a brewery located at 1 Grand Ave, and also knew that the “L” had a downtown station on Grand. With that information in tow, as we pulled into Grand Station I detrained and made my way outside. A quick look around to get my bearings and there catty cornered to the station was 1 W Grand Avenue and an inviting “Rock Bottom Brewery” sign.

Rock Bottom is a Restaurant/Brewery chain with locations throughout the country. The beers are all brewed onsite to exacting standards. I enjoyed a full pour of a delicious hazy Belgium Pale Ale and just a taste of their Hop Bomb IPA and the Red Line Express. Conversations with Heather, our bartender, and a couple of other brewery travelers at the bar kept me entertained until is was time to journey on to my next stop.

Adams Street Brewery

I was off to meet Tom, my cousin and downtown Chicago tour guide. We discussed briefly where to go and settled on Adams Street Brewery. Adams Street is the brewery side of The Berghoff Restaurant, a well known downtown establishment with a long, rich Chicago history. The beers are tasty and the food outstanding. I enjoyed a flight and shared Tom’s witbier. The wit style was new to Tom and is now one of his favorites. A special thanks to Monty, our bartender who presented me with a DrinkIllinois summer passport; an excellent document in which to record my Illinois travels.

Une Annee Brewery – Niles, IL

Searching for Une Annee Brewery led to a commonplace strip center located in Niles, IL. Positioned among the discount stores, restaurants, and the like is a large, red, nondescript “Brewery” sign. Perhaps not a typical brewery introduction, but only more proof that it’s what’s inside that keeps this tourist coming back. Une Annee focuses on seasonally produced Belgium style ales; many are appropriately sold in 750 ml bottles for serving and are some of the most innovative brews I have come across. The taproom itself is comfortable, inviting and an oasis away from the parking lot traffic just left behind. The recognizable friendliness of the brewery patrons and helpfulness of our bartender to which I have become accustom made for a very enjoyable visit. Did I mention it’s pet friendly! When next you find yourself hesitating to venture on when crossing by an unfamiliar brewery, Une Annee is proof the best move is to lay aside the uncertainty and step inside…

District Brew Yards – Chicago

The District Brew Yards provides a common taproom for three small local breweries in West Town Chicago. Each brewery has a designated wall with ten taps available to present a variety of their beers. The brews are dispensed using a “pour your own” system. The system is easy to use and understand. A single card is issued as you enter and is used to track purchases by the ounce for all three breweries. Each brewery provides a Beer Guide who is always nearby and willing to answer any questions and/or provide advice. The featured breweries include: ATB (Around the Bend), Bold Dog, and Burnt City. I spent my time meandering from station to station tasting a good variety of beers from each brewery. But for those patrons who have chosen a favorite, there are plenty of tables and seating available to sit, relax, and enjoy a full pour…or two… Cheers!

On Tour Brewing Company – Chicago

On Tour is located in an unassuming warehouse style brick building toward the south end of Chicago’s West Town. At the intersection of two quiet side streets there is plenty of street side parking making On Tour a convenient stop for those traveling by car. Once inside, you step into a large comfortable tasting room, complete with high ceilings, ample seating, a cozy lounge area, and plenty of room to walk about and mingle.

I spent a good amount of my time chatting with Andy, our bartender. His suggestions helped me settle on a crowler of Lowboy to carry back to Wichita for our next Tasting Club meeting. Lowboy is a German maibock, a lighter version of a traditional bock. In addition to Lowboy, Andy provided a wealth of information on other On Tour brews, thoughts on nearby taprooms and brewpubs, and the ever changing Chicago craft beer scene. Originally from Iowa, Andy will be a “go-to” contact for me when my travels take me that direction.

Piece Brewery – Chicago

Piece Brewery and Pizzeria is a very popular Wicker Park brewery and eatery. Offering an array of award winning brews and really outstanding pizza. Piece is a great place to sit back and people watch. Along the lines of a casual restaurant / sports bar but still serving up some top notch craft beer. Come for the food, come for the beer…either way you can’t go wrong!

Sketchbook Brewing Co – Evanston, IL

Sketchbook is a small community based brewery located in the heart of Evanston, a quintessential local gathering spot for friendly conversation and good beer. The brewery is located just feet away in an alleyway behind the taproom. Community based means over 400 members; local patrons who share a mutual appreciation with the owners and brewers. The members receive discounted beer and merchandise and participate in special events.

Distribution of Sketchbook beers is more extensive than one might expect. Their brews can be found throughout the area. As the name implies, special attention is paid to the can design and artwork. This beauty and creativity add to the overall experience of enjoying one of their brews. Next time in the area, saddle up to the bar, relax and prepare yourself to take advantage the laid-back ambiance and friendly conversation offered at this local meeting place.

Temperance Beer Co – Evanston, IL

Temperance has one of the most innovative approaches to its role as a member of the community I have come across. Not only offering a variety of beers, large taproom, and gathering spot, but also hosts entertainment, tours, yoga, and supports local charities. There is comfortable space to relax and enjoy a freshly brewed favorite or meet a large group of friends to gather and recount the day. Their Temperance Trikonasana couples beer and yoga. The classes take place at the brewery and after toning their minds and bodies participants enjoy a beer and conversation. Proceeds from the classes are used to support local charities.

If you’re in the Evanston area, Temperance is a place you should get to know; if just passing through, it is definitely worth the time to stop and enjoy. Cheers!

Chicago Day 1 – Smylie Brothers Brewing Co.

The first of four breweries we visited on day one was Smylie Brothers located in Evanston, IL. Evanston is one of the North Shore communities about twelve miles north of downtown Chicago. Known for its BBQ as well as its award winning brews, Smylie Brothers is a popular eating and drinking establishment for Evanstonians. After a few samples and conversations with Fuigencio, our bartender and Zeff, the Manager, Brian (my touring partner) and I settled on a couple of flights which included a variety of styles. The most usually brew I have had to date is their Berliner Weisse with woodruff syrup. It’s a very tasty, refreshing, and drinkable beer. I consider myself a brewery tourist, but not a beer expert; any attempt by me to describe it would not do it justice. I will say, if you stop in Smylie’ Brothers for a visit, you owe it to yourself to give it a try!

Amtrak adventure – Chicago!

It’s difficult for me to capture in a few words the sense of adventure I feel when traveling cross country by rail. The whole experience is rooted in a less hurried, friendly experience. Once on board, travelers become companions, it simply becomes too bothersome to remain isolated. Politeness becomes the rule, not the exception. The dining car itself (where diners are asked to turn off their cell phones), is an experience. The car is filled from back to front as diners enter. The tables seat four, and due to limited space, all seats are filled. As a solo traveler, for breakfast, I joined a couple from New Mexico and another single traveler from Canada. Of course we chatted about our trips, our families, adventures…I will likely never see these people again, but for a moment, a positive moment, our lives are shared and one positive moment after another, builds a lifetime.

When I’m away from my desktop, my antiquated equipment makes posting pictures to charliecooksthebooks.com a bit complicated. I will be posting to Instagram as my brewery tour in the Chicago area begins. Please take a look there for pictures @charliecooksthebooks Cheers!

Wichita Brewing – East 05/14/19

Wichita Brewing Company is the second oldest brewery in Wichita, opening their doors at their west location in 2011. The owners had a vision to produce not only great beer, but also outstanding pizza. They have masterfully succeeded at both. Just about everyone in our group of a dozen or so enjoyed a favorite brew and a few slices of pizza. To make the evening extra special it was $2 Tuesday… a pint of beer could be enjoyed for $2! On another visit, I plan to dive into a Beer-amid (with the help of a like-minded brew fan). This is a flight of sixteen different brews served on a metal contraption…see the picture below. WBC is a great place to gather to eat and drink, and enjoy good times with good friends. Cheers!

Kyle TravisMAY 15, 2019 AT 2:02 PM

Love the “beer-amid” picture…so clever. You probably should take two friends with you – one to help drink them and one to drive.

Augustino’s – 756 N. Tyler

Those of you who know me know how much I enjoy Old Town. One of the chief reasons for my enthusiasm is the proximity of so many local breweries with their great neighborhood crafted brews, pleasant laid-back atmosphere, friendly people, and general setting for good times. Augustino’s has brought all of this to west side Wichita, plus some great food as the kitchen is again fired up! There was a good crowd for a Tuesday evening. Apparently Augustino’s is no longer a secret and has become a go to afterwork stop for many. Our group ordered several flights, so I was able to get at least a taste of all twelve of the brews on tap. There were many good ones, but the consensus favorite was the Maltster’s Paradise Barleywine; one of the best barleywines you may ever taste. Truly an outstanding beer! If you haven’t been to Augustino’s lately, you owe it to yourself to stop in and give the barleywine or another of the tasty brews a try and who knows, you may discover a new west side hangout.

Limestone – 707 N. Waco

Limestone is tucked away between Central and Murdock on North Waco, sharing space with Sweet Allie B’s. It’s a great place to get together for a just a drink or to enjoy a brew and really great food. One of our uninitiated companions was surprised to learn that the ten brews on tap did not include Miller Lite 😮 … but the Halfway House Hefeweizen was a tasty light bodied ale that hit the spot. The rest of us picked a favorite or enjoyed a flight, sampling several. We were also treated to a mini-tour and a question & answer session with Dan Holmes, brewer.

Next up: Tomorrow, we will be heading west to Augustino’s. My first visit since it reopened!

    1. Hal Cumberland MAY 6, 2019 AT 4:38 PM Charlie – Hal Cumberland here- I am new to your blog thanks to Randy Ward. Are we invited to Augustine’s? If so, when? Thanks HalP.S. I am a frequent traveler to Texas. If I can bring in some Jester King, Lone Star yellow rose, Axis IPA etc, I would be glad to oblige- Cheers Hal

    1.  Charlie MAY 6, 2019 AT 4:48 PM Hi Hal, Thanks for following. Yep, everyone is welcome. I never know what to expect, the local stops have any where from two to a dozen or more joining in. Tomorrow 05/07/19 around 5:00. Cheers!

Beaver Brewery at Mo’s Place – a back road destination!

I fancy myself not only a brewery tourist but also a back road traveler, often avoiding interstates and busy highways as I travel. Beaver Brewery at Mo’s Place is a perfect combination of the two. Located at the crossroads of two county roads in unincorporated Beaver, KS. Getting there can be a challenge, there’s not much guidance, and don’t expect any help from I-70 signage. Once there, however, your first thought will likely be that it was well worth the effort. I arrived in the middle of the afternoon, probably the only slow time of day for this popular destination spot for thirsty folks from near and far. Even as the room was nearly empty, Dale and Austin, the owners, were bustling about readying for the evening’s business. Watching the extent of preparation necessary was a reminder of just how much time and commitment it takes to operate a successful brewery and restaurant. I was able to try several brews: an IPA, a red, a pale ale, and the Light’s Out Stout. All impressively flavorful and delicious. My only regret is I didn’t come hungry…next time I’ll make sure I have room for at least a cheeseburger and onion rings!

Kansas Heartland Tour – Quinter

Yes, Quinter! Located about a mile north of I-70 on the east side of Main St is Center Pivot Restaurant and Brewery. A modest exterior hides the expansive interior decorated with refurbished and reclaimed materials from area farms, bars, and restaurants used to create a unique setting. Make sure to walk around and don’t hesitate to ask Steve, one of the owner, to share the story behind his brewing venture. On tap is his Cracked Pepper Cream Ale and several brews from other small breweries from around the state. The Ale is light and smooth finishing with just enough kick. If you need another reason to stop in, come hungry and don’t pass up the fried chicken buffet!

Kansas Heartland Tour – Hays

I am often asked “What’s your favorite brewery?” …every time
I walk into a brewery for the first time I feel I am meeting a new friend; each
with its own personality. A personality that embodies the characteristics and
style of the owners, brew masters, employees, patrons, location, and even its
physical structure. For me to have a “favorite” is not possible.

In Hays you will find two breweries; each offering a
wonderful, friendly experience, knowledgeable staff, and great beers. And each
distinctly different.

Defiance Brewing Company – Defiance is
located in the southeast part of town in a large industrial style building. In
addition to the bar there are ample high tops and seating outdoors to
accommodate large and small groups alike. I arrived a few minutes before
opening but was not turned away. Sidney, the bartender, invited me to take a
seat at the bar. I accepted and spent a few minutes sampling several beers
before settling on Big Money, a breakfast IPA. Moments after I arrived patrons
began to make their way in: newbies, regulars, and those traveling through.
Defiance is a great place to meet, talk, partake in friendly conversation and a
enjoy great beer!

Gella’s Diner & LB Brewing Co. – LB is located in the Chestnut Street District of
downtown Hays, occupying ten thousand square feet of renovated space originally
built in the early twentieth century. This combination of old and new give
Gella’s and LB a rich feel of revitalized tradition. I was able to spend a good
deal of time talking to Brendan, the Head Brewer. His meticulous attention to
detail, quality control, and focus on traditional beers result in very
friendly, drinkable and wonderfully tasting brews. And if you’re hungry Gella’s
is a full restaurant with plenty of room offering great choices and catering.

Next time you’re in Hays or passing through, my advice is to hit up one or both of these impressive breweries….. And stay tuned for another I-70 treat I’ll wager will be brand new to most (if not all) of you!

Outside at Aero Plains

Hard to believe just two days ago ten of us gathered at Aero Plains to enjoy some great brews and a beautiful spring evening seated outside. Soon, I’m sure, this cold weather will be completely behind us and there will be ample opportunity to take advantage of the outdoor seating many of our local breweries provide. Enjoying the evening air with a good brew in hand…a great way to unwind and recount day among friends!

Hopping Gnome – 03/28/19

I consider Hopping Gnome my Gateway to the West! Why you may ask? …There are eight breweries within a mile or so of CCB’s Command Center, of these Hopping Gnome is the one you will encounter first as you trek west. What a great location; ride the Q and make sure to include Hopping Gnome when jaunting around Old Town or the Design District. HG has a relaxed, neighborly ambiance, friendly staff, and great beer. I enjoyed a flight of seasonals plus the ICT IPA. The Salty Gnome was my favorite; this sour gose will convert you. Great fun, good friends, and tasty beer!

Central Standard Brewing

What a great evening to visit Central Standard. We got there early and as the brewery began to fill to a manageable crowd, so too did our group. We had a good gathering of nine or ten regulars and four newbies. Needless-to-say tastes varied, many brews were sampled and explored. Some of us are quite adept at describing the subtleties of our brews; others (yours truly) are less proficient, merely binary raters, we can say only if we like it or we don’t! But all enjoyed the discussion and the friendly conversation, sharing our tastes, and what we enjoy and look for in our beer. Meeting with old friends and making new ones, friendly conversation, and good brew. Yes…what a great evening!

Nortons & Aero Plains

Faithful followers braved the rain and met up at Norton’s last night. An engaging group; lively conversation, good food, and tasty brews were had! And ya gotta love the creative names Nortons gives their beers: Don’t Poke the Bear, Infamous Butcher, Luv Bug, Milo’s Sparkly Eyes, and Polka Dot Princess…to name a few. As we were breaking up, it was suggested we stop by Aero Plains for short visit. After some arm-twisting (not) off we went. The conversation got livelier and beer was still tasty, Kogi Brut IPA was my choice. Aero Plains has its share of creative brew names. Dove Runner Red Wheat for one, with an interesting Wichita/Delano connection to that name.

An official visit to Aero Plains will be made 04/09/19, make sure to periodically check the schedule –> 2019 Spring Schedule

Up next is Central Standard on 03/19/19. See you there!

Third Place Brewing

A good turnout braved the chilly air last night. We started
at Third Place where I’d say the group’s favorite beers were Red Truck IPA and
Springboard, an American Light Ale. As we began to break up, several of us
weren’t ready to call it a night so we made our way around the corner to
Nortons to double the night’s fun. An official tour stop is schedule for
Nortons on Tuesday 03/12/2019.

Tulsa – Our Six Brewery Tour Stop

Tulsa – This trip was the most vigorous tour yet! We visited
six breweries in two days…and two popular pubs: Lefty’s and McNillie’s, where
we met, talked, enjoyed some good food, and took the opportunity to try a
couple of brews from around the region. But on to the breweries, our tour
focus! We started at Marshall Brewing, the oldest brewery in Tulsa and it has
played a major role in shaping Tulsa’s vibrant craft beer scene.. Next up was
Cabin Boys, so named because the owners (the boys) first brewed their beer in a
cabin. We showed up twenty minutes before opening, but without hesitation, our
two barkeeps kindly made a place for us at the bar and we got started on our
flights. On to Nothing’s Left Brewing, located in a converted gas station. Many
breweries have creative names, one of the best is Nothing’s Left; so named out
of frustration. When the brewery was first opened, all of names the owner
wanted to use seemed to be taken and there was….Nothing Left! Elgin Park has
only been open a couple months and is located near the Drillers ball field. We
were fortunate enough to arrive at a time when Ben, the Master Brewer was able
to chat for a time and treat us to a tour of the facilities. New Era Fine
Fermentations brews only gluten-free beer. They go to extra work and
preparation to accomplish this and the end productions don’t miss a beat! The
final stop on this tour was American Solara SOBO. America Solara produces brews
that define craft beer. They are well known for their sours, but put their
skill into producing many styles of top level beers. Every single one of these
breweries had knowledgeable, friendly staff and a variety of great
beers…Tulsa is another reason to keep this charliecooksthebooks brewery tour
train rolling!!

Thank so much to my wonderful Tulsa hosts Laura and Kyle
Travis!

River City Brewing – 02/15/19

River City is Wichita’s oldest brewery, established in 1993.
Quite a trend-setter to Wichita’s outstanding craft beer scene! Our group
enjoyed reds, wheats, stouts, and my favorite; Tornado Alley IPA.. An evening
filled with flights, pints, and pizza. If you stayed home because of the
cold..you missed a warm, inviting time with friends, great brews & food,
and good conversation.

Check the schedule for upcoming activities: more Wichita tour
stops, road trips, and tastings —> 2019 Schedule

Radius Brewing – Emporia, KS

Radius is another outstanding brewery Kansas has to offer.
Having now visited thirty-one breweries; to some I am still a novice. My
experience is complete enough, however, that I feel it’s fair to point out a
couple qualities I have found present in every visit. 1) The satisfaction and
pride the owners, brewmasters, and employees alike have in their work and their
product. 2) The uniqueness and character each have. Radius is no exception, a
great combination of quality brews and great food items, especially known for
their pizza. I talked with a couple of off-duty employees who were there just
to enjoy the food. When I asked their favorites, I was given a list as long as
my arm! Truly, Radius will become a way-stop for me when traveling between KC
and Wichita. For our next tasting, I returned with a growler of Low 5 Pale Ale;
it’s light and smooth, with just enough hop presence to give it character
without being overpowering for those who appreciate an easy-drinking brew.

As an added treat – I stopped at Walnut River in El Dorado on my way back!

The PourHouse

The PourHouse was chosen to start our 2019 Wichita Tour due
to its distinction of being the closest taproom to CCB headquarters. Just 934
feet due west! It’s not only the location that has made it a favorite spot, but
a great selection of flagship as well as seasonal beers, good food, and its
association with Walnut River Brewing in El Dorado. A “must try” is
their Warbeard Irish Red, truly one of the area’s best known brews. Make sure
to check out the upstairs when you stop by for a visit.

Listed first on our local brewery page. More information

Tasting Club – January Meeting

What a great start and what a great group of people! The
Charliecooksthebooks Taproom Touring & Tasting Club (CTT&T Club) met
for the first time Friday, featuring brews from four Colorado breweries: Pagosa
Brewing and Riff Raff in Pagosa Springs; San Luis Valley and Square Peg in
Alamosa. There was good food, conversation, discussion of upcoming events, and
stories that were as entertaining as they were informative. With the addition
of new members our ranks have grown to nineteen. We are made up of
knowledgeable beer enthusiasts as well as those who are just beginning to step
into the world of craft beer.

Exciting tour adventures were discussed and have been included on the schedule page —> 2019 Schedule. Whether you are a member of the Tasting Club or just interested in enjoying getting to know more about breweries and craft beer, come and be a part of the fun! We have undertaken an ambitious schedule which includes a second tour of the Wichita breweries, a continuation of the Kansas tour, and excursions to other cities and states around the region. Get on board! First up; we begin our Wichita Tour Round Two with a visit to The PourHouse, 711 E Douglas (0.2 miles west of CCB headquarters!). This Thursday 02/07/19. Meet around 5:00 PM!

Pagosa Springs, CO : Riff Raff – East

Riff Raff – East offers a great selection of brews including
an easy drinking Kolsch, the Hobgoblin IPA, Plebeian Porter, and one of my
favorites; the Stepchild American Red. There is a cozy bar area, restaurant
seating, and an outdoor patio offering beautiful views of the river and
snowscape. These mountain breweries continue to provide fascinating
conversation to this flatlander… stories of backwoods snowshoe treks,
homemade skis, avalanche blasting, and much more. My journey continues…

Alamosa 1 – San Luis Valley Brewing Company

The San Luis Valley Brewing Company is a well established
Alamosa craft brewery featuring a full service restaurant and even incorporates
a coffee shop. I ventured in fairly late on a weekday night. It was cold and
wintry, so as expected there were just a patrons, all seated at the bar; a long
haul trucker and his wife, a Amtrak worker, and a couple of other folks just
enjoying a brew and a few minutes out of the cold night air. Conversation was
brisk and entertaining. I learned from this crew about a second local taproom
that had opened just the previous month. This new knowledge made it impossible
for me to call it a night, so after finishing my flight which included a
seasonal red amber, a stout, a chili lager, and an amber ale, not just I, but
the entire bar decided to make this a small impromptu mini-brewery tour and
made our way to the Square Peg!

Alamosa 2 – The Square Peg Brewerks

…So lest you feel we needed to forge the cold night for
long, The Square Peg is located right next door! We broke the silence as we
burst into the good sized taproom. Again this being a chilly, late weekday
night patrons were scarce. Sianna, our barkeep, at first might have been a bit
indifferent to our noisy little group showing up just an hour before closing!
But by evening’s end, I think everyone had enjoyed the brews, stories, and new
friendships. The Square Peg is a farm-to-tap brewery offering a variety of
brews; farmhouse ales, IPAs, The Common (an American light lager), the Perky
Porter, and more.

Both these taprooms are well worth a visit! Should you find
yourself in Alamosa, be sure to stop in. Local breweries continue to be one of
the best ways to experience the hospitality of any community.

Tasting #3

Our tastings have developed into informal events without a
strict agenda. Last night we had brews from over fifteen different breweries
from various states throughout the region. Needless to say we knew we wouldn’t
make it all the way through so attempting a start-to-finish progression wasn’t
an option. Rather, majority ruled as we choose different beers and/or breweries
to focus on. The brews were well organized by state so sorting through was
easy. We ended up sampling about one-third of the beers available. The food was
good too: Sweet & sour meatballs. And for the first time something not from
the slow-cooker. Those first to arrive watched as vegetarian fried rice was
prepared just minutes before the start of the tasting.

What was learned:

    1. Cooking non-slow cooker food for a group this size requires more
      than a $10 single stand-alone burner.

    1. Fifteen breweries are too many. Although we had a great time
picking and choosing, it was difficult to absorb information about all the
beers, the breweries, and their locations.

    1. We need a bigger refrigerator! 🙂

Positives:

    1. Many new participants.

    1. Great beers, good food, and new experiences were had by all.

    1. Conversation was boisterous and entertaining.

    1. Two new membership certificates were passed out.

    1. An added bonus this time was Aubrey Olson’s artwork on display.

Consider joining Charliecooksthebooks Taproom Touring and Tasting Club.

Open Tasting 01/11/2019

Friday 01/11/2019 starting around 5:30 p.m. we will be
hosting an informal tasting featuring beers from Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas,
Iowa, and Indiana

Breweries included are: Three Floyds, People’s Brewing,
Toppling Goliath, Kansas Territory, WiseAcre, KC Bier Co, and more…

Food from Charlie’s Comfort Kitchen: Slow-Cooker Sweet &
Sour Meatballs and Vegetarian Fried Rice.

Other well known lagers will also be available for the
non-converted craft beer lovers.

Thanks to the generosity of our many friends, followers, and
members there is no charge to attend. Everyone is invited.

An added bonus will be a preview
of local artist Aubrey Olson’s Final Fridays showing to be held 01/25/2019 at
Third Place Brewing.

The PourHouse 01/04/2019

The PourHouse is a great addition to Wichita. There are now six breweries and a craft distillery within a half mile of charliecooksthebooks’s command post! Truly in the midst of the Wichita brewery scene.

Our group enjoyed some good food, several flights, and pints.
The PourHouse offers a good variety of brews, featuring a mild Kolsch, IPAs,
Porters, and more. Stories were told, good times revisited, and the
conversation was lively and robust…even quite enthusiastic at times. But then
even accountants can be a bit cantankerous at times! Thanks to all who
attended. See you next time!

Winter: San Juan Mountains & The Great Sand Dunes

Scott and I have taken numerous road trips together from
Maine to California. Memories made, stories retold, adventures experienced… a
pathway to that which I cherish most; the time we spend together.

Hiking and summiting (well, Scott did!) the Great Sand Dunes in the winter… ten cars in the parking lot, summer will bring 1,000! Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the San Juan Mountains.

Aubrey Olson’s first Final Friday – ICT showing.

Aubrey Olson’s work in colored chalk, ink, and pencil.

On Friday 01/11/19 in conjunction with our Open Craft Beer
Tasting, we will be hosting a preview of her Final Fridays – ICT showing to be
held at the end of the month by Third Place Brewing; 630 E. Douglas, Wichita,
KS. Works in colored chalk, pencil, and ink.

Three Rings Brewery – McPherson

Three Rings tradition can be traced back to the current generation’s 12th great-grandfather, Berend Brauer, the Brewmaster in Einbeck, Germany.  Martin Luther is well known for his appreciation of beer and in particular, beer from Einbeck. Legend has it that his stein had three rings around it that stood for the Ten Commandments, the Creed and Lord’s Prayer. Hence the name Three Rings Brewery, carrying on a brewing tradition through the centuries!

Present day brings us two of my favorites Whiskey Barrel Bulldog and Vertigo IPA fermented in a tequila barrel. Both will be available at a CCB tasting soon to be announced.

3Rlegacy

Three Rings Brewery is a family run operation offering selected brews for sampling and purchase for carry-out at its McPherson location. Core and seasonal beers are distributed to taprooms, bars, and liquor stores throughout Kansas. CCB (charliecooksthebooks) will be organizing a tasting in Wichita…stay tuned! The roots of Three Rings tradition and also its name go back 500 years.

Hutchinson – Sandhills & Salt City!

My friends know how much I enjoy living in Wichita; arts & entertainment, shopping, dining and so much more coming of age in our fair city! Well that is the same feeling I came away with after my time spent in Hutchinson. Activities and many things to do and enjoy.  And the contribution of the two local taphouses cannot be overstated. I was treated to tours of the facilities of both Sandhills and Salt City.  During conversations with Pippin, the owner of Sandhills and Steve the owner of Salt City, their passionate and enthusiastic for their brews, their customers, and their city was evident.

Salt City Brewing

Salt City’s casual setting engenders good conversation and a relaxed setting to enjoy one or more of the seventeen craft beers on tap; something for everyone and not a gloomy face to be seen. Everyone, including Stella (see pic below!) was in a friendly mood. Salt City doesn’t have food service, but Yummy Tummy catered in some top of the line Fried Catfish and Okra! There are plans with room and facilities to support expansion, my plan is to taste and enjoy what Salt City has to offer now and in the future.

Sandhills Brewing

Sandhills’ taproom has been open only four weeks, but judging by the crowd on an early Saturday afternoon it has established itself has a “go-to” destination. The feel of Sandhills is akin to a local coffee shop, a place to come, sit back, relax, and spend a little time…with the advantage of sipping on a delicious craft beer! The focus at Sandhills is oak barrel fermented, oak aged specialty beers, and sours; with a range of additional faster-to-mature beers. Come by and spend some time, try a few, and my bet is you will find something you enjoy.

20181117_124511[1]img_3329-1200x900

Hank is Wiser Brewery – Cheney, KS

I’ll start by saying… Those who missed this trip, missed one of our best stops. Anyone who wants try again, I will tag along in a heartbeat! Hank is Wiser offers everything a craft beer seeker is looking for: A relaxed, friendly atmosphere, good food, great stories, and some excellent brews!

Hank is Wiser is a true nanobrewery; the outstanding beers are crafted using a 15 gallon brewing system. Limited production means the brews are not available in cans or bottles and must be enjoyed on tap. Before settling in Cheney about thirteen years ago, Hank was poised to open as the second craft brewery located in Wichita. How he landed in Cheney is just one of the great stories Hank can share. Along with several beers from local breweries, there were four HWB brews available; A blueberry Shandy, An IPA, a milder American IPA, and a Stout. All masterful representations of the various styles. Below is a picture of the brewing system, and Hank and his wife Jane, affectionately known as Mama Jane. 🙂 We also met and Merissa, our amiable and skilled barkeep and Steve, brewer and rib master. If you don’t think make the trek to Cheney for the beer…make it for the ribs! Our small group left with a slab and a half packed to take home!

Colorado Brews

Many thanks to my Pagosa Springs hosts Chuck & Roxie, it was an amazing experience! I have posted about a couple of the Colorado drinking establishments I visited but there are a few more that need to be mentioned. All worth a visit next time you head to the mountains of southwest Colorado:  Mountain Pizza and Taproom, Three Barrel Brewing Co., Riff Raff Brewing Company, Pagosa Brewing & Grill, and Coyote Moon Bar and Grill.

Mountain Pizza and Taproom, Pagosa Springs, CO – A visit to Mountain Pizza was my first experience with “pay by the ounce”. They use an “Ipourit” system that allots 32 oz. to a customer that is tracked using a wristband. The customer then pours as much or as little from any or all the brews on tap one at a time until the quota is filled. Refills are available as long as you are behaving yourself! Many local brews were available as well as a few well-known regionals, and a Spaten Oktoberfest from Munich. This is a perfect set-up for someone wanting to experience a variety of brew styles or choices.

Three Barrel Brewing Co., Del Norte, CO – Three Barrel, located right on US 160 in Del Norte, is known for its wood fired pizza and using locally sourced ingredients. Locals hops and malts, mountain mineralized water, and clover honey, just to name a few. The retail shop for Haefeli’s clover honey is located right next door and is worth a visit for their sweet clover honey. There were eleven beers on tap, my favorites were the Sipster IPA 5.9%, 45 IBU and the Black Copter 6.2%, 33 IBU.

Riff Raff Brewing Company, Pagosa Springs, CO – Riff Raff is a well-known local brewpub operating in a renovated Victorian house. Great atmosphere, good food, and a local go-to spot. My favorite beer was the Stepchild American Red similar to an American IPA, only red 6.0%, 41 IBU. Man’s Best Friend American-style Honey Kolsch 4.0%, 20 IBU was another favorite at the table.

Pagosa Brewing & Grill, Pagosa, CO – Comfort food, dog friendly, and award-winning brews! A great place to relax and soak up the Colorado experience. Sixteen beers on tap.  My favorite: Powder Day IPA, 6.8%.

Coyote Moon Bar and Grill, Pagosa Springs, CO – Another local favorite for good, hearty, comfort food at a good price. And if you pick the right night PBRs on special!

Dean & Co. Brewery Taproom – La Junta, CO

The Dean & Co. Taproom has been open only a month or so and La Junta is lucky to have such a great place to gather and enjoy craft beer…. to my Kansas friends, I would definitely recommend stopping in next time you find yourself traveling through. As a contract brewer for Durango Brewing Co., Dean & Co. is currently serving exclusively Durango beer. I sampled five brews and enjoyed all five. The Durango Blueberry Wheat Ale is one of the best blueberry beers I have tasted. It’s a seasonal, out of production this year, but will be back next season. Cheers!

Pagosa Bar – Pagosa Springs, CO

There are two businesses located in downtown Pagosa Springs just a few doors down from each other. Both have been in operation in the same location since the turn of the twentieth century. Goodman’s Department Store featuring a wide variety of western wear and accessories. And Pagosa Bar, opens at 8:00 a.m. and one of four bars in Colorado where you can still light up a Marlboro.

Beer before Breakfast!

When restrictive smoking laws went into effect in Colorado, Pagosa Bar was exempted and grandfathered in to the old laws. Hence smoking is allowed and they are able to open at 8:00 a.m. And their happy patrons take full advantage of both! With the exception of the pool table, there is a feel of walking into an old west saloon, complete with rich hard wood finishing and old west murals on the walls.

Dean & Co. Brewery – La Junta, CO

On my way to Pagosa Springs, driving through La Junta and coming around a bend on US 50, out of the corner of eye I spot a small sign “Taproom Now Open!”. Having done my homework and not remembering reading about any taprooms in La Junta, I stopped in my tracks!

Walnut River Brewing Co. – El Dorado

Awesome time at Walnut River!

Walnut River’s beers can be purchased in liquor stores throughout the area, but nothing compares to sipping brews among friends enjoying the ambiance of this turn of the twentieth century taphouse!

….The entire bar seats about twenty-five and it was a full house Friday night. If you visit, make sure to take a look at the old photographs displayed throughout the bar and read the brief write-up of the building’s colorful history. We were lucky enough to be treated to a short tour of the brewing facilities and learned a good deal about not only Walnut but also craft brewing in general. Plans are beginning for our next road trip, could be Cheney, Hutchison, McPherson, or Salina…make sure to come along. Or for those of you who missed El Dorado, it’s right up the road; I’d be up for another trip!

The group’s consensus favorite’s #3 Irish Red and the Porters #2 & #6

Bricktown Brewery East – 09/24/18

Many thanks to everyone! Your help, encouragement, participation, and patience has made the first phase of this journey rewarding and a ton of fun! As the next stage takes us beyond Wichita, I will endeavour to improve the blog and the overall experience.

Please send me your thoughts and ideas.

Bricktown East was another good time, good company and good beer. I took advantage of the outstanding selection Bricktown has on hand of craft beers from throughout the region. My favorite of the night was Hoptometrist a double IPA from Roughtail Brewing in OKC. Delightfully hoppy without a strong bitter aftertaste. If you like IPAs give this a try!

Wheat State Distilling – 09/21/18

A good group turned out for our visit to Wheat State Distilling featuring their own (and Wichita only) distilled spirits. The spirits are sold under two labels, Wheat State and Distillery 244 and can be found in liquor stores throughout Kansas. Michelle, our barkeeper, did a masterful job explaining not only the various spirits but what is involved in the distilling process.  As a gin drinker, my favorite was the Wheat State Gin. It offers a milder, less juniper taste & aroma than most gin (the distinctive “Christmas tree” flavor gin is known for). Another favorite was the bourbon barrel aged vodka. I’m not a vodka drinker but this is one I will enjoy getting to know!

The bourbon was good too. It uses Kansas grown corn and wheat in its sour mash which is a cool thing.

Bricktown Brewery West – 09/17/18

It’s tough getting this crew to travel west, so this was a solo stop. At 4:45 on a Monday afternoon, not surprisingly I had my choice of seats at the bar. I settled in, took a gander at the thirty or so beers on tap from breweries throughout Kansas and surrounding states. On another night I might have expanded my choices, but tonight I wanted to taste the Bricktown brews. They offer a very reasonable flight that includes 4 oz. samples of the seven Bricktown beers currently on tap. Click here for a listing of samples —> Bricktown West 09/17/18   Scott, who has been with Bricktown West since it opened provided a knowledgeable summary of the selections available. We spent a good deal of time comparing our thoughts on not only beers, but other local breweries. The beers were tasty and offered a variety; even if you are an American lager drinker, don’t shy away from Bricktown, my guess is you will find a brew to your liking.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse

We got an early start at BJ’s arriving around 4:30 and was greeted by Amanda. Amanda has been with BJ’s since it opened in Wichita six years ago and needless-to-say was a big help in sorting through the selections. As a full service restaurant BJ’s not only has a good collection of their own craft beers but a number from other local breweries. Our group, one of the largest for a tour stop gathered at the bar, each of us finding a brew (or cocktail) to our liking. I have found at many taphouses that also operate a full restaurant, while seated at the bar, the feel of a local pub is not lost . Another great night of good beer, good company and easy conversation!

Wichita Brewery West

Making the trek west I arrived at WBC-West at straight up five and joined a good crowd of craft beer enthusiasts already enjoying their favorite brew. Spending a few minutes studying the menu and quizzing Christine, bartender extraordinaire, I made my choices for an eight beer flight. Craft beer conversation was in high gear, comparing notes with a traveler from Washington, we discussed breweries we have visited from around the country. The Wichita tour is almost complete, but I see an endless supply of road trip destinations in the future! In addition to a brewery, WBC-West is a restaurant specializing in wood fired pizza; I had a couple of slices of The Royal Porker that helped soak up my eight samples. WBC-West has a friendly atmosphere and maintains the feel of a local taphouse, the food is good, the beer is tasty, and conversation easy.

Aero Plains Brewing

A brief stop was made at Aero Plains early on the tour. Finally getting a chance to return, we gathered at the bar a few minutes after five to a fairly standard size crowd for an early Friday evening. There was a bit more hustle and bustle going on behind the bar and about the room than expected. Later we learned why; a large group visiting Wichita was stopping by later as part of their Wichita tour. This activity didn’t deter Michelle, Tasting Room Manager, from spending a good deal of time talking to us about the brews on tap and some really cool stories behind their names. Wichita history is incorporated into many; ask her about the Running of the Doves! We were able to taste nearly all of the beers by sharing a couple of flights (See the Breweries – Craft Beer Adventures page for a listing) . Aero Plains offer a wide variety of styles to satisfy nearly every taste, including a light recently introduced by Head Brewer, Troy Bervig. Beautifully done and located in historic Delano, Aero Plains is another example of Wichita’s top-notch brewing industry.

Tasting – Not Lost Brewing in Ottawa

Not Lost Brewing currently distributes its craft beers locally in the Ottawa, KS area and will soon be opening a brewpub.  A good friend of mine who is close to the owners recently brought by a few samples. The examples offered were outstanding and provided a variety of styles, including a delicious, crisp rice lager. I’m excited about the upcoming opening and will plan a road trip as soon as more details are available. Manhattan was a ton of fun…don’t miss this one!

Little Apple Brewing Comapny – Manhattan, KS

The third leg of this first brewery tour road trip took me to Little Apple Brewing Company. I arrived just as it opened at 11:00 am and made my way to the bar. I was immediately greeted by Kursti. Once she walked me through the brews on tap displayed on cow shaped boards lined on the wall, we chatted a bit more about the brewery operations and its history. I learned that Little Apple is the second oldest brewery in Kansas opening in 1995. I ordered a flight of six and a Memphis Pulled Pork sandwich; with old blues playing interspersed with other good listening music, for a moment I felt like I was on Beale Street! Little Apple like so many brewpubs has that great feeling of openness where conversations are easy and stress is left at the door.

Tallgrass Tap House – Manhattan, KS

The motivation for this journey to Manhattan was the news that Tallgrass Brewery was suspending operations. I had read the Tap House is a completely different entity from the Brewery but wanted to see for myself. The Tallgrass Tap House is not only a separate entity but also operates its own brewing facilities. They have their own extensive array of brews that are not distributed and can only be experienced at the Tap House. My understanding is the association with the Tallgrass name will continue but the suspension of operations at the Brewery will not have any significant effect on the Tap House operations. Alex, my first bartender (I stayed through a shift change) gave me a good rundown of the brews on tap, I sampled several of the Tap House offerings (see the brewery tour page) and two favorites from the Brewery: Buffalo Sweat and 8-bit. Trek took over for Alex, we were briefly joined by Nate and continued good conversations about The Tap House and the craft beer industry in general. Their passion for what the Tap House offers and its future is apparent.

Blue Skye Brewery and Eats – Salina, KS

Spontaneous road trips with loosely defined itineraries have become a standard in my “semi-retirement”. This one began with Manhattan as the sole destination, but after a few dozen miles I decided there was plenty of time and headed straight north to Salina. A few minutes before noon I made my way into the Blue Skye and took a seat at the bar. Servers were bustling about as a good but manageable lunch crowd was filing in. Jessica greeted me at the bar and worked her way through my barrage of questions exceedingly well considering it was only her second day! The Blue Skye has been around since 2013 and offers a full restaurant but still has the cozy comfort of a local brewpub.

Limestone Beer Co.

Thanks to all of you charliecooksthebooks.com now has over 50 followers!  Yesterday we had our largest group to date gather at Limestone. Among all of us we managed to sample all the beers on the menu, including a Hefeweizen by guest brewer Dan Holmes. We found enough seats at the bar so we  were within earshot of Drue, our bartender, and with his help everyone found a brew to enjoy. The best brew take-away from the evening was (without calling anyone out), a life-long Corona drinker is now a big fan of Milk Chocolate Thunder, a Milk Stout. Limestone shares space with Sweet Allie B’s so great food is also available. Great time!

From Corona to chocolate does not make sense unless it was the fifth drink

 Dan Holmes

Charlie, thanks for popping your head into the brew room. It was nice to meet you, and I’m glad you liked the hefeweizen. Best of luck on the blog.

It was fun. I enjoyed the beers at Limestone. I saw this interesting news bit today. Tallgrass production plant suspends operations indefinitely.

 Augustino Brewing

Our first venture west! We arrived close to 5:00 and entered a door near a small sidewalk patio close to the north end of the pub. Augustino appeared to have a larger venue attached to the south that hadn’t yet opened for the evening. Inside, we took a seat at a table and immediately felt comfortable enjoying a “Cheers” atmosphere so common to Wichita brewpubs. Nathan assisted selecting choices for each of our particular tastes. There were a couple of brews on the menu no longer available and several not yet listed, so a little extra help was needed. I managed to at least taste all but one. Good beer and fun people!

Wichita Brewing Company East

Arriving before anyone else I took advantage of the time to look over the beer menu for several minutes. Seated at the bar, I ordered the first of two flights (see the Brewery Tour Page for a listing). The bar was full so when the rest of the small group got there we moved to a table. We were greeted by Skyler, spent a few minutes discussing our preferences and were guided by her capable assistance throughout the evening. Wichita Brewing is one of the oldest local breweries in Wichita with a larger seating area than many of the tap houses. They maintain an extensive array of choices with brews to satisfy all tastes. I managed to sample a dozen of them!

Third Place Brewing

Just up the street from my office I arrived a little before 5:00 and took a seat at the bar. A few other patrons were seated about lending to a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. I was greeted by the amiable bartenders Dawn and Tia. They were awesome all evening, attentive, friendly, and their suggestions were spot on; with their help I ordered a four-sample flight (See the brewery tour page for a listing). I received a mini-tour from Jason, one of the owners, and chatted for about twenty minutes. A great story of creativity from hobby to store front. Third Place is proof that Wichita’s local breweries have some of the best crafts brews that can be found anywhere!

Hopping Gnome Brewing Company

A stop at Hopping Gnome was made last night – last minute scheduling, sorry for the lack of notice! I arrived first and spent twenty minutes or so chatting with the other patrons at the bar and Brandon, our bartender. Small breweries are one of those wonderful venues where boundaries fall and common ground is found quickly. When the rest of the small group arrived we moved to a table. Two of us enjoyed a flight of the six permanent brews; see the brew tour page for a listing. Great atmosphere with a distinct local feel.

Norton’s & Aero Plains

Last night was to be Stop #3, but after a grand time at Norton’s, we pushed on over to Aero Plains for #4. A bit too hot to sit outside, we planted ourselves near the bar, made our choices with the help of Layla (our knowledgeable and attentive server); dark, light, and my choice a flight of IPAs. Great beer, interesting conversation, an order of Bacon Crack, and a welcoming atmosphere at another one of Wichita’s exceptional breweries made for an excellent time.

But not quite done we ventured to Aero Plains in Delano with the specific intention of tasting the Wingman Wheat. By now the evening air was cool so a spot outside was perfect. Our conversation expanded to a nearby table swapping stories and information about places to continue our brewery adventures. On a side note: Aero will be re-visited so we will have an opportunity to have a more complete experience. Thanks, Charlie
